A Royal Pain in The Butt!

Butt pain is caused by many factors (including the odd irritating individual), ranging from Sciatica, Arthritis, Muscle Strain, Piriformis Syndrome, neighboring pain from a previous injury in the back or legs or even something as simple as having something like a wallet or keys in the same back pocket (if pain is located pain it is usually the case)

Piriformis Syndrome is linked to a muscle of its names sake. The Piriformis muscle sits deep within the buttock and can be a little irritant to the Sciatic nerve also, it can go into spasm and cause pain in the buttock region.

Neighboring pain can be bought on from a previous injury or strain above and below the area, pain can travel, dehydrated fascia and muscle spasms all contribute to pain and discomfort.

Sciatica, according to the Virtual Medical Center, 1 to 10% of the population suffer with Sciatica pain, most commonly in people age 25 to 45 years. Sciatica is the pinching of the Sciatic nerve caused by many factors including a herniated disc, arthritis of the spine (particularly the lower vertebra). The pain is usually on one side traveling anywhere from the buttock, through the leg to the sole of the foot. Prolonged sitting or standing can also irritate the Sciatic nerve and those that are over weight can have a tendency for this excruciating pain.

The Bowen Technique is a treatment to influence the soft tissue tension throughout the body with an aim to resolving the root cause of the issue, it targets and hydrates fascia throughout the whole of the body and encourages the body to reset and repair. This technique is a very gentle technique, there is no need to ‘manipulate’ or ‘pummel’ tense areas. The concept of a deep massage to ‘work out’ the pain is a myth and will only treat the symptom short term. In fact less is always more in this situation, Bowen taps into the superficial and deep fascia that communicate with the body they are  the connective tissue that connects to every system of the body and responds to Bowen movements with amazing results.

  • If Sciatic Pain – Rest!
  • Located Buttock Pain – look at what you carry in back pockets and remove.
  • Homeopathic anti inflammatories can help: Rhus tox help with stiffness and aching in back strains caused from lifting. Nux vomica  helps with a cramping pain, worse in the morning. Kalium carbonicum for stitching pains.
  • Hydrate! drinking water with Energetics Rehydration will help with cell respiration as well as hydrating fascia.
  • Gentle exercises while in bed morning and evening: Laying on your back, bring both knees up so feet are flat on the bed. Drag the heel of one foot slowly back to the buttock and  raise in the air, as high as is comfortable. Slowly lower the leg to the bed gently and bring to starting position. Repeat this a further five times then repeat with other leg.
